Chihuahuas are the smallest dogs in the world. Show quality Chihuahuas can weigh as little as 1.5 pounds. Pet quality Chihuahuas weigh up to 10 pounds. Chihuahuas are very curious by nature. The Chihuahua dog’s small size makes it a popular pet with city dwellers who don’t have a lot of room. Chihuahuas are known for their loyalty and devotion. If they are not properly socialized, Chihuahuas can be very jealous. Chihuahuas are very nervous and can bite when startled or frightened, so they do not make good pets for households that have small children. Chihuahuas are fearless and will sometimes confront other animals many times their own size. Because of this, Chihuahuas need to be watched when they are interacting with other animals.

Types Of Chihuahuas

There are long haired Chihuahuas and short haired Chihuahuas. A long hair Chihuahua will usually have very thin hair, but a short hair Chihuahua will have shorter, thicker hair. There are also teacup Chihuahuas, who are even tinier than standard Chihuahuas. A teacup Chihuahua can have more health problems than a standard Chihuahua because of its tiny size. Teacup Chihuahuas are not recognized by any kennel association, and are a result of selectively breeding Chihuahuas that are smaller than other Chihuahuas. As a result of this selective breeding, teacup Chihuahuas can be even more nervous and prone to genetic defects than standard Chihuahuas.

Where Can I Get A Chihuahua?

Unfortunately, many people buy Chihuahua puppies as pets but abandon them when they realize that Chihuahuas are a lot of work and require a lot of attention. Because of this, there are many Chihuahua rescue groups that can help you find the right Chihuahua for you. You can search on the Internet to find breeders that have Chihuahua puppies for sale. Chihuahuas have a lot of fans, and there are many websites devoted to Chihuahuas with suggestions for cute Chihuahua names, and pictures of Chihuahuas. While it’s easy to fall in love with this toy breed, Chihuahuas are not toys. They are animals that require a lot of human attention and devotion. If you have small children a Chihuahua is probably not the best dog for you since Chihuahuas are easily startled and can snap or bite when frightened. If you don’t have small children, and have a lot of time and energy to give a pet, a Chihuahua can be a wonderful pet and companion.
